We realize that even though MAC address is not personal information, it is still a fine line to tread and might be a grey area still open for debate. Thus, we are taking additional steps to further protect privacy as follows:

  • ‘De-identify’ MAC addresses – before being stored in our DigitalOcean cloud server, data is transferred securely (using SSL) and is then ‘hashed’ or scrambled into a meaningless string of numbers and letters. Once a MAC address is ‘hashed’, it cannot be reverse engineered by a third party to reveal its true identity.

  • Strict data sharing policy – We only disclose aggregated, anonymous data to our clients. Since data is aggregated, it is not possible to be used to track a specific device. We do not sell, rent, or otherwise disclose device-specific information to third parties.

  • Responsible, privacy-focused partner – Our WiFi firmware partner who provides us with raw data is one of the companies who comply with a Code of Conduct mandated by Future of Privacy Forum in US

Note: The Future of Privacy Forum (FPF) is a Washington, DC based think tank that seeks to advance responsible data practices. The forum is led by internet privacy experts Jules Polonetsky and Christopher Wolf and includes an advisory board comprised of leading figures from industry, academia, law and advocacy groups.
